Roger Williams settled Providence for religious freedom and no forced worship, and many people migrated there to escape religious persecution. Later on, Rhode Island`s many coves along its shore provided hiding places for pirates and smugglers, and the puritans of other colonies were disgusted by this and Reverend Cotton Mather was noted calling Rhode Island "the sewer of New England." Eventually, Rhode Island earned the nickname "Rogues` Island."
